If this incident of a miracle in the Gospel were to be put in a movie, it would make for a very dramatic and fantastic scene. What would even make it more compelling is the fact that among all the miracles that Jesus performed, this was the only one that was done with only three words. Actually, there were three words in the English translation, but in the original Hebrew it was only one word, and it only meant “Go.”
The evil spirits were uttering all sorts of words at Jesus, making a lot of noise. What was the response of Jesus? Silence. The evil spirits were asking to be sent to the pigs. What was the response of Jesus? Silence.
And when they insisted, Jesus said only the word, “Go.” And the evil spirits ran off to the sea and drowned. Jesus knew that the devil did not have to be destroyed. The devil would self-destruct. It had a mechanism that would destroy itself. That was why He did not feel the need to fight it.
When the citizens of the village saw what happened, what was their response? They told Jesus, “Please leave our place. We want our peace.” And what was the response of Jesus? Silence.
Then he walked away. Why would he stay in a place that did not want his presence?
Silence is golden. And silent waters run deep. Shakespeare also said, “Silent men are the best men.” With the noise of the storm, with the raucousness of young children at home, it is good to remember that silence is not only golden, but it is also powerful.
The world is full of noises and we add nothing to it with our attachments and the wrong priorities in our hearts. It is only in silence that we will discover again that the Lord speaks to us.
