Umaasa ang Church People – Workers Solidarity (CWS) na makamit na ng mga manggagawa ang nararapat na living wage sa paggunita ng labor day.
Ayon kay San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza na National Chairman ng CWS, nakasaad sa Rerum Novarum at Gaudium et Spes ni Pope Leo XIII na hindi optional ang karapatan ng mga manggagawa na matamasa ang living wage.
“The right to living wage is not an optional right in the Catholic social teaching, it is rooted in the dignity of the human person which, while it is of eternal worth, is also realized concretely in the here and now, each person’s dignity is lived out or denied within realities of life. If the lived experience of people does not reflect or enhance human dignity, then the social, economic, and political context must be changed to make it more humane and protective of persons’ dignity,” ayon sa mensahe ni Bishop Alminaza na ipinadala sa Radio Veritas.
Iminungkahi ni Bishop Alminaza sa pamahalaan na gamiting basehan ang pag-aaral ng Ibon foundation na 1,207-pesos ang daily living wage ng isang manggagawa na may sinusuportahang 5-miyembro ng pamilya.
Bukod sa pagkakaloob ng nararapat na daily living wage sa manggagawa, inihayag din ng Obispo ang pagtutol sa isinusulong na economic charter change ng mga mambabatas na papabor lamang sa mga foreign businesses sa halip na palakasin ang lokal na sektor ng kalakalan.
“CWS echoes the stand of various sectors against cha-cha. Allowing foreign corporations 100% to invest in our country is not the solution to the crisis of Philippine economy. In fact, it is wrong to believe that the country is restricting foreign investments. In the past fifty years, through trade liberalization and deregulation, the country has been opening up the economy to foreign capital. We have more Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) than countries such as South Korea, China, and Taiwan and yet our economy remains backward and underdeveloped,” ayon pa sa mensahe ni Bishop Alminaza.
Bilang paggunita sa Labor Day sa May 01, magsasagawa ang Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) at iba pang labor groups ng kilos-protesta sa ibat-ibang bahagi ng Pilipinas upang ipinawagan sa pamahalaan ang umento sa sahod ng mga manggagawa.
