Kinundena ng Church People Workers Solidarity o CWS ang pagtutol ni Department of Labor and Employment secretary Bienvenido Laguesma sa mga panukalang itaas ang sahod ng mga manggagawa.
Dismayado si CWS national chairman San Bishop Gerardo Alminaza at CWS-NCR chairman Fr.Noel Gatchalian sa pahayag ni Laguesma na ang isinusulong na wage hike ay makakasira sa balanse ng ekonomiya at maraming manggagawa ang mawawala ng trabaho gayundin ang pagkalugi at pagsasara ng maraming negosyo.
Inihayag ng dalawang opisyal ng simbahan na ang pahayag ni Laguesma ay pagsuporta sa mga negosyante at hindi sa kapakanan ng mga manggagawa.
Naninindigan ang CWS sa kanilang suporta sa isinusulong na 100 hanggang 150-pesos na legislated wage increase para sa mga manggagawa.
Inihayag ng C-W-S na nararapat makamit ng mga manggagawa ang family living wage na 1,207-pesos para makasabay sa patuloy na pagtaas ng inflation rate.
Unang kinundena ng Federation of Free Workers (FFW), SENTRO ng Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggawa , Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) at iba pang labor groups ang hindi pro-labor na pahayag ng kalihim.
“FFW hopes that on May 15, 2024, the House Committee on Labor will approve the ₱150 wage hike across the board nationwide, as this would be a significant step towards addressing the needs of Filipino workers and promoting a fair and just society. May 15, 2024, will also mark the 133rd year and 33rd year anniversaries of Rerum Novarum and Centimus Annus, the encyclicals by Pope Leo XIII and Pope John Paul II, respectively, which both championed the idea of a family living wage, highlighting the ongoing relevance of this principle in ensuring the dignity and well-being of workers,” ayon sa mensaheng ipinadala ni FFW National President Sonny Matula sa Radio Veritas.
Sinabi ng mga labor group na malinaw na pagpapakita ng suporta sa pribadong sektor at mga negosyante ang pahayag ni Laguesma na dapat ay nagsisilbing kinatawan at boses ng mga manggawa.
“The TUCP strongly feels that because of his grave disservice to the Filipino people and President Marcos in feeding him the empty assurance of action by the regional wage boards which for 35 years never gave the ₱100 increase passed by the Senate and the ₱150 increase we are fighting for in the House of Representatives, the capability of the Labor Secretary to competently do his job to protect workers and promote gainful employment is squarely in serious question. He can no longer be the Secretary of Labor if he keeps on being the employers’ poster boy against a legislated wage hike at the expense of the working class of this nation,” ayon naman sa ipinadalang mensahe ng TUCP sa Radio Veritas
