Gospel Reading for June 11, 2024 – Matthew 5: 13-16

GOOD FOR NOTHING

Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

————

As we grow into young adults, most of us tend to search for meaning in life. We feel we need to have a direction, a goal in life. If, from childhood our gifts have been honed, it would be a lot easier to discern the direction to take to make our life meaningful.

All of us were given a life for a reason, for a mission. Unless we find the reason or the mission to which we are called, we would be like salt that lost its taste, and in the strong words of Jesus: GOOD FOR NOTHING. St. Barnabas, whose memorial we celebrate today, was one of the early martyrs of the Church, who dedicated his life to preaching the Gospel with Paul. His and Paul’s light shone not only during their time, but continues to shine even today as they inspire us to do good deeds ourselves and give glory to our heavenly Father.

St. Barnabas, pray for us!
