Gospel Reading for August 28, 2024 – Matthew 23: 27-32
WASTE OF SPACE
Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out!”

Jesus is still at it. He is still furious at the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees. What is amusing is the accuracy by which he describes them. Imagine being likened to whitewashed tombs that are beautiful outside but full of dead men’s bones and filth inside? In short, when we are hyprocrites, we cannot claim a life at all because we are a place where the dead are buried.
If we are to truly live, our life has to be based on the TRUTH, and nothing but the TRUTH. Otherwise, we will just be wasting our time on earth. Some even call it a WASTE OF SPACE. How tragic!
“Falsehood I hate and abhor; your teaching I love.” (Psalm 119: 163)
