Gospel Reading for September 18, 2024 – Luke 7: 31-35

AN EFFORT IN FUTILITY

Jesus said to the crowds: “To what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

————

Those of us who are so concerned about how others see us or think of us, are WASTING TIME. This is because people have different sets of values, having been brought up in different ways. We cannot expect everyone to like us or to think good of us, especially those who simply do not like us. People will see what they want to see, and think what they want to think. So, why bother?

What’s important is how God sees us. He looks at our hearts and apart from ourselves, he alone knows what is deep inside our being. He will always see our good works even when others don’t. He will always see our efforts to be good, and he reinforces this through his Spirit. Unlike some of us, God will never insist we are bad when we are good. He does not have PREJUDICES. He is a very good Father who loves all his children EQUALLY.

Let us not live our lives constantly wanting to be appreciated, recognized, accepted, etc.. It is AN EFFORT IN FUTILITY and this is not what living is all about!

Lord, teach us your ways!
