“Sagrado ang ating boto wag nating ibenta.”
This was the appeal of Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and retired Police Deputy Director- General Ricardo De Leon to the voting public during the ninth Veritas Servant Leadership Halalan forum 2016.
Sen. Pimentel pleaded to the electorate to reject vote-buying because vote-buyers have their own agenda and it negates the concept of commitment to the growth of the people.
“Yang vote-buying na yan ang isa sa pinakamabigat na problema… Ang problema walang kumakanta na binili ang boto ko. Kasi kasama siya. Yung namimili ng boto ibig sabihin gustong-gusto nila yung posisyon. Iba na ibig sabihin nun. Ibig sabihin meron siyang agenda na pansarili,” Sen. Pimentel explained.
Gen. De Leon said that voting-buying demoralises candidates’ commitment to the growth of the people.
“Definitely talagang mag-uundermine ang kanilang commitment to the growth of the people. Paano natin marrerecover ang expenses na yan? Di sa ibang paraan. Kaya dapat ito’y mabigyan ng lunas,” Gen. De Leon added.
Sen. Pimentel also said that the government should go beyond numbers and statistics, they have to make sure that the gross domestic product (GDP) growth that they reported trickles down to the public.
“Ang nakikita ko po sa mga economic planners natin na-oobsess sila sa GDP growth. Pero parang hindi po pwedeng hanggang doon lang. Anong sitwasyon ng tao? The leader kung talagang may commitment siya sa growth of the people dapat hindi siya makuntento sa mga ganoong report. Alamin ang tunay na sitwasyon sa baba,” Pimentel said.
For his part, Gen. De Leon said that government leaders should take a “deep dive” and see first-hand what is the actual situation of the people in their community.
“Ang basehan po natin ay sa tao kasi sila yung kliyente. Sila yung magsasabi kung ‘yung iyong binigbigkas ay nangyayari. As a servant leader dapat very strong nang commitment. Dapat magdeep dive, ibig sabihin pumunta tayo sa komunidad kasi nandun po ‘yung problema. The moment nalaman na nating ‘yung problemang yun at gagawa tayo ng programa ang importante po doon alam ng community that they are part of that”, Gen. De Leon said.
