Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Last September 13, Typhoon Ferdie (International Name: Meranti) made landfall over at Itbayat, Batanes. Typhoon Signal number 4 was raised in the area with the strongest recorded gustiness of the wind reaching at 296 km/h. The province was declared under state of calamity last September 15, 2016.
While we thank the Lord that there are no casualties; 2,850 families were affected – this is a lot in a province with a population of around 17,000; Some municipalities such as Itbayat and Basco, Batanes had incurred 578 totally damaged houses and 1,730 partially damaged houses and a few more houses from other municipalities such as Mahatao, Uyugan, Ivana, and Sabtang have been damaged as well.
We ask for your assistance in helping Batanes rebuild. It approximately takes 15,000 pesos to repair one home as there is currently low supply of resources in Batanes and the materials would need to be bought from Manila or nearby provinces and transported. Repair of the damaged church, convent, and school, according to Most Rev. Camilo D. Gregorio, DD, Bishop Prelate of Batanes, would also cost an additional P12 million.
