At prescribed instances in the celebration of the Mass, we either stand, kneel or sit down. Kneeling is a gesture of adoration. Sitting is not to rest, but to listen to the Word of God attentively. Standing means being ready or “standing by.”
Mary is said to have been “standing by” the cross of Jesus. Standing by the foot of the cross where her Son hung, it meant she was ready to take His place if ever called upon to do so.
Mary stood there because she was ready to do anything to lessen the suffering of Jesus, her Son.
We “stand by” because we are ready. We “stand by” because we are ready to take somebody’s place.
Mary stood by Jesus. Mary stood for Jesus. For whom do you stand? By whom do you stand?
