Gospel Reading for October 12, 2024 – Luke 11: 27-28
BLESS US
While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
————
The woman was saying that Mary is blessed because she carried Jesus in her womb and breastfed him, but Jesus’ reply says a lot about her, and gave her the credit. The reason why Mary is blessed is because she heard the word of God and observed it despite the many sorrows and pain she had to go through in life as a result of following God’s call.
It is the same with people who tend to tell the parents of a newly-ordained priest how blessed they are to have a priest in the family. The priest is the one blessed because he heard and responded to God’s call. And, the family cannot claim the priest as theirs alone, because he will have a new family – the Family of God.
It is listening to God’s word and acting upon it that will BLESS US in life because everything we do, even in the midst of challenges, will contribute to the betterment of the human race, of the world. God always gives us the credit when we decide to follow him. As Jesus often said to those who got healed, “Your faith has healed you!” (Mark 5: 34)
Lord, help us to steadfastly follow you amidst challenges we face in life!
