Last week, a low pressure area (LPA) and a tail-end of a cold front caused heavy rainfall equivalent to a one month rain volume poured only in 4 hours. It resulted to a massive flooding affecting 23 barangays in the City of Cagayan de Oro and the province of Misamis Oriental. According to the report from the Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Cagayan De Oro, 331 houses were totally damaged and 860 partially damaged and parishes outside CDO has a total of 63 totally damaged houses.
The residents require relocation as they are unable to return to the areas they lived before since they are now considered high risk living in a “danger zones’ and do not have the capacity (financial means or technical expertise) to adequately rebuild their homes. Also, a report from the diocese of Butuan stated that about 312 houses were totally damaged in La Paz in Agusan del Sur.
In this regard, the Diocese of Butuan who are in immediate need for food, medicines and potable water and the Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro are asking for our help for their Transitional Housing Project. Based on the cost estimate and model houses prepared by volunteer architects and engineers, one (1) unit of transitional shelter for a family of five and above, would require an amount of Thirty Thousand Pesos (Php 30,000.).
