Nanawagan ng kahinahunan ang Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People (CBCP-ECMI) sa mga Overseas Filipino Workers matapos isulong ang ‘Zero Remittance Week’.
Ayon kay CBCP-ECMI Vice-Chairman Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos nawa ay pag-isipan itong mabuti ng maraming OFW at hindi na makiisa dahil malaki ang magiging epekto nito sa pamilyang Pilipino.
Ito ay dahil marami ang umaasa sa padalang salapi ng mga OFW upang matustusan ang pang araw-araw na pangangailangan.
‘I feel deeply for the plight of our Overseas Filipino Workers, who are often hailed as moder-day heroes for their sacrifices and contributions to our nation, however I must express concern over the proposed ‘Zero Remittance Week’ as a form of protest, while I understand the emotions and frustrations that may have led to this initiative, I urge all involved to reflect on the broader implications of such an action,’ mensaheng ipinadala ni Bishop Santos sa Radio Veritas.
Ayon pa sa Obispo, napakahalaga din ng remittance rate ng mga OFW sa sektor ng pangkalahatang ekonomiya ng Pilipinas.
Inihayag ng Obispo na lubhang maapektuhan ang mga negosyo at manggagawa sa negatibong epekto ng hindi pagpapadala ng remittances.
Apela ni Bishop Santos ang maayos na dayalogo sa pagitan ng mga nagsulong sa inisyatibo at isipin mabuti ang magiging negatibong epekto nito sa ekonomiya ng Pilipinas, higit na sa kanilang mga pamilya o mahal sa buhay na naiwan sa Pilipinas.
“As a Bishop, I call for unity and dialogue, let us seek peaceful and constructive ways to address our grievances without cause harm to our families,and our nation, I pray for wisdom, and discernment for all involved, that may we find a path and fosters healing and the common good, may we always remember that our strength as a people lies in our compassion and solidarity,” ayon pa sa mensahe ni Bishop Santos.
Nagsimula ang mga apela ng ‘Zero Remittance Week’ mula sa mga taga-suporta ni dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte bilang mapayapang pagpapahayag ng kanilang paninindigan matapos arestuhin ng International Criminal Courty (ICC) ang dating pangulo.
Batay naman sa pinakahuling datos ng Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, umabot sa 3.24-Billion US Dollars ang OFW Remittance Rate noong January 2025, mas mataas ito 3.15-Billion US Dollars na datos noong January 2024 ngunit mas mababa sa naunang buwan ng December 2024 na umabot sa 3.73-Billions US Dollars.
