The feast of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila is celebrated every 2nd Sunday of October for her image carved in 1593. The image was given as a gift to the Dominican fathers which has been elegantly decorated and placed in a well-lit carriage in a form of a ship. During the festival, the beloved image is brought out of the church followed by a dozen images of Dominican saints. The procession goes around the main streets of Sto. Domingo Parish and returns to the church amidst applause until it reaches the altar pedestal.
The celebration commemorates the Virgin’s intercession under her title Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario- La Naval de Manila that successfully repulse invading Protestant Dutch forces during the Battles of La Naval de Manila, in a fashion similar to the Battle of Lepanto of 1571. Pious believers also credit the icon with maintaining the Catholic faith in Philippines.
Pope Pius X granted the image a canonical coronation on October 5, 1907, while the image and her image and shrine were designated as a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines in 2009, making it one of the country’s cultural properties.
Radio Veritas 846 is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila. Established in 1969, the Ramon Magsaysay recipient Catholic radio station continues to be a leading social communications ministry for truth and new evangelization in the country today.
