Radio Veritas is inviting the public to visit and pray before the images of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz from September 19 to 28, 2016 and Saint Raphael de Archangel from September 20 to 29, 2016 at the Our Lady of Veritas Chapel in Quezon City.
Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint was born in Binondo, Manila to a Chinese father and a Filipino mother who were both Catholics. In 1636, he was falsely accused of killing a Spaniard. To escape possible arrest, he boarded a ship bound for Okinawa Japan with three Dominican priests and a leper. At the time of their arrival, the Tokugawa Shogunate, the rulers of Japan during that time were persecuting Christians. Refused to renounce Christianity, Ruiz died from blood loss and suffocation. His body was cremated, with the ashes thrown into the sea.
Saint Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified during Pope John Paul II’s visit to the Philippines on February 18, 1981. It was the first beatification ceremony to be held outside the Vatican in history. He was canonized by the same pope on October 18, 1987. He is the patron saint of Filipino youth, the Philippines, people working overseas, and altar servers. His feast day is celebrated on September 28.
Meanwhile, St. Raphael is one of the seven Archangels who stand before the throne of the Lord, and one of the only three mentioned by name in the Bible. He appears, by name, only in the Book of Tobit. Raphael’s name means “God heals.” This identity came about because of the biblical story that claims he “healed” the earth when it was defiled by the sins of the fallen angels in the apocryphal book of Enoch.
St. Raphael is the patron saint of travelers, the blind, bodily ills, happy meetings, nurses, physicians and medical workers. He is often pictured holding a staff and either holding or standing on a fish. His feast day is celebrated on September 29, along with St. Michael and St. Gabriel.
The images of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz and Saint Raphael de Archangel are open for public veneration from 8:00am to 5:00pm at the Radio Veritas Chapel located at the second floor of Veritas Tower, 162 West Avenue cor EDSA in Quezon City. For inquiries, please call Ms. Renee Jose or Mr. Rey Isabela at (02) 925-7932 to 39 local 129.
