Gospel Reading for September 26, 2024 – Luke 9: 7-9

ORDINARY PEOPLE

Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, “John has been raised from the dead”; others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”; still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.” But Herod said,“John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see him.

————

A lot of us think that kings are extraordinary people. As a matter of fact, they live in palaces and sit on a throne that is specifically for them. Well, palaces and thrones are not for ordinary people. But the truth is, they are ORDINARY PEOPLE like us. Not being exempt from death is proof enough that they are not gods, but just ORDINARY PEOPLE. They cannot live forever in this world. Even their kingdoms do not last forever. A lot of monarchies had been abolished in the middle and latter part of the 20th century mostly as part of the process of decolonization. It won’t be surprising if at the end of this century, the present number of 43 monarchies remaining in the world today, will have dwindled too much or altogether abolished.
The King Herod in our gospel of today is no exception. He was also just an ORDINARY PERSON. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been greatly perplexed by Jesus, and neither would he have been trying to see Jesus. Powerful that he was, he knew that Jesus was an EXTRAORDINARY PERSON.

King Jesus Christ, you are THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE KING, and your kingdom will never end!
