Call to Discipleship: According to the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, Jesus called Andrew and his brother Peter to be “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:18-20; Mark 1:16-18). They immediately left their fishing profession to follow Jesus.
Significant Events: While Andrew is mentioned in various Gospel accounts, he is notably present during the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:1-14) and is the one who brings a boy with five barley loaves and two fish to Jesus.
Andrew’s Martyrdom: The details of Andrew’s later life are not extensively documented in the New Testament. Tradition holds that he preached in areas around the Black Sea and Greece. He is said to have been martyred in the city of Patras, Greece, where he was crucified on an X-shaped cross, which came to be known as the Saint Andrew’s Cross.
Patron Saint: St. Andrew is the patron saint of several countries, including Scotland, Romania, and Greece. The flag of Scotland, the Saltire, is based on the X-shaped cross associated with Andrew’s martyrdom.
