In line with the celebration of Reading Month this November, Radio Veritas and Lampara Books recently launched a reading campaign to the Catholic Schools in Manila.
Titled “Journey to Bookland”, the campaign which aims to help rekindle the interest of the students in reading books kicked off last Wednesday, November 16, 2016 with a short program at the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parochial School in Pasig City and Holy Trinity Academy in Sampaloc, Manila.
Teachers and students expressed their excitement for the campaign. Ms. Marivic Manlincon, English Coordinator of the Holy Trinity Academy said that the Journey to Bookland is a great opportunity for students to be encouraged to read Filipino-written books.
“It’s the time for our kids to be exposed with Filipino fictions and nonfictions like these, because whether we like it or not, they (our students) are exposed to English (books). This is something very challenging because most of them are not good in understanding Filipino fictions, but it’s time for them to love our own especially our Filipino writers,” Ms. Manlingon added.
According to Dr. Clifford Sorita, Marketing Consultant of Radio Veritas, the campaign gamifies reading to tickle the interest and imagination of the students to read books. In this campaign, each student shall read all 12 books in order to reach the “Bookland”. These books are Superwoman si Inay, Joseng Dalag, Lilay, Si Andoy, Batang Tondo, Ang Elepante at anim na bulag, Ang Pinakamasayang Biyahe ni Karen, Gaano ba Kalayo Patungong Paaralan?, The First Star, Alamat ng Duhat, Ang Nag-iisa at Natatanging Onyok, A Thousand Paper Cranes, and Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Batang Aswang.
Students will have an “avatar” that will represent them in the journey. After reading each book, they will take a comprehensive examination to gauge their learnings. The first 60 students to reach the Bookland will receive a gift from Radio Veritas and Lampara Books.
Ms. Aiko Salazar, Marketing Officer of Lampara Books said that they are privileged to take part in this campaign.
“Ang Lampara Books ay natutuwa na naging parte kami ng Journey to Bookland ng Radio Veritas at ng Reading Month celebration. Sana matuwa kayo dun sa mababasa nyong kwento. Sana magenjoy kayo at in the end, makarating kayo sa Bookland,” Ms. Salazar said.
The Department of Education officially declared November as Reading Month in 2011 by then-Education Secretary Armin Luistro through Memorandum #244 and November 27 of each year has been declared as “Araw ng Pagbasa” (National Reading Day) through Republic Act 10556. This is in honor of the father of former President Benigno Aquino III, the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., whose birth date is November 27, 1932.
Lampara Books brings to children, parents and teachers the brightest stories from the current harvest of children’s literature in the Philippines, as well as the literature of different countries from all over the world. Each story is carefully written or retold by budding and award-winning Filipino writers and illustrated by illustrators of children’s books. Each book is written in two languages—Filipino and English—to reach a greater number of readers.
