Commemorated on Maundy Thursday is the day before Jesus Christ was crucified. The word Maundy was derived from the Latin word, “mandatum” which is the first word of the phrase “Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos” which means “A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another; as I have loved you”). This was the statement made by Jesus in the Gospel of John where He explained the significance of washing of the feet to His apostles.
An important celebration on Maundy Thursday is the institution of the Holy Eucharist, which is manifested in the re-enactment of the Last Supper scene. Holy Thursday is also notable for being the day on which the Chrism Mass is celebrated, usually in the dioceses’ cathedrals. During this Mass, the holy oils are blessed by the bishop, consisting of the chrism, oil of the sick, and oil of catechumens. These oils will be used for the baptism and confirmation on Black Saturday at the Easter Vigil.
During Maundy Thursday, it is also customary for Filipinos to visit seven churches to pray before the Blessed Sacrament in each church. This custom is called “Visita Iglesia” which is a Spanish term for “to visit churches”.
Meanwhile, Good Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. This day is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum, the three day commemoration of the passion, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is also the day when the faithful do the acts of fasting, abstinence and prayer.
Radio Veritas 846 is owned and operated by the Archdiocese of Manila and is a member of the KBP. Established in 1969, the Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient Catholic radio station continues to be the leading social communications ministry for truth and new evangelization in the country today.
