Saint Maria Goretti is an Italian virgin-martyr and one of the youngest canonized saints. She was born to a farming family. Her father died when she was nine, and they had to share a house with another family, the Serenellis. History has it that Alessandro, the Serenellis’ son, attempted to rape her. When she refused to submit to him, he stabbed her numerous times. Maria died the next day forgiving Alejandro. Her last words were, “I forgive Alessandro Serenelli … and I want him with me in heaven forever.”
Maria Goretti was beatified by Pope Pius XII in a ceremony at Saint Peter’s Basilica on April 27, 1947 and was declared saint three years later on June 24, 1950. She is the patron saint of purity, chastity, rape victims, girls, youth, teenage girls, poverty, and forgiveness and her feast day is celebrated on July 6.
