Gospel Reading for October 22, 2024 – Luke 12: 35-38
WE WILL BE READY
Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants.”

“Be Prepared!” is a scout’s motto, and rightfully so, because this worldwide youth social movement employs a program of informal education with emphasis on practical outdoor activities such as camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports. They are trained early to bring everything they need before they go into any activity. They cannot be like the foolish virgins in Matthew 25: 1-13 who did not bring extra oil for their lamps, that when the bridegroom arrived late, they did not have enough oil and missed being admitted to the wedding feast. At the end of the parable, Jesus said, “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”
We need not be on the watch as security guards are, bracing themselves for thieves or intruders. To be on the watch here means – to live a life that is aligned with God, so when he comes, he will find us prepared. WE WILL BE READY.
Lord, may you find us always ready to welcome you into our lives!
