Gospel Reading for May 12, 2024 – Mark 16: 15-20

WILL NEVER SUCCEED

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

Time to go. Mission accomplished. And, the mission is passed on from generation to generation and will continue until the end of the world. So blessed are we to take part in Christ’s mission because it is unlike any other mission on earth. It is the mission of God’s Son to make sure that inspite of the devil’s extra efforts to destroy mankind and our world, HE WILL NEVER SUCCEED. If all of us baptized Christians do our part in the mission, what a wonderful world this would be!

Let us reflect on this song written by Dan Schutte, HERE I AM, LORD –
I, the Lord of sea and sky;
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I have made the stars of night.
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord
Is it I, Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go, Lord if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of wind and flame;
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
’til their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord
Is it I, Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go, Lord if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
